Strangely, I found myself awake and alert at 8am on this glorious Sunday morning. Well, maybe not glorious ... it was raining like a sumbitch out there, but I was awake and alert ... big, productive day ahead, no doubt.

I turned on the TV and grabbed the Sunday newspaper from the front step. Went straight to the comics as the TV news droned on in the background. The cat jumped up next to me on the couch, completely eclipsing the rest of the paper on the couch to my right ... she's kind of fat, you see. But that's ok ... after reading the comics and the sports page (which I had already segregated as she does this to me every week) I was already planning to jump in the shower.

After showering, I ran some errands, returning home around noon-thirty ... just in time for 'Jeopardy!' on GameShow Network. Cool.

I continue with the Sunday Inquirer, all the while playing along with the 'Jeopardy!' game taking place on the screen in front of me ... more heard than seen ... mixing questions about the capital of Liberia with the stories of the fire in Rhode Island; Saddam Hussein and Benjamin Franklin; Frederick Douglas and Hans Blix ... a little of this, a little of that.

Final Jeopardy comes along ... I'm reading about that wannabe spy Air Force guy (hey that rhymed!) Regan all the while knowing that 'Who is Irving Berlin?' is the correct question for Final Jeopardy.

Just as Trebek proves me right, there's a loud sound out back ... like an M-80 or a gunshot, and the power goes out.

Great. Just fucking great.
I'm glad I never got around to throwing in that laundry.
Fuck.

Getting up from the couch - the cat still being firmly asleep on the bulk of the sunday paper, paw curled over her eyes to keep out the dreary sunshine - I head over to my rear slider door. Apparently, that's exactly what you're supposed to do, because all of my neighbors are doing the same.

"What happened?"
"Did you HEAR that?!?"
"This blows."

About three minutes later, the cops and fire engines show up in full force. There turned out to be nothing seriously wrong, other than a blown transformer, but we were still without power.

More importantly, I was without power.

Linus has his blanket, I have my boxes.

* I'll finish this later ... I've already gone way longer than I had wanted *
