I always find it difficult to be around my suburban mommy friends. Once I was at a picnic...and it seemed like every conversation was about minivans. Gah. I had a couple beers and played tag with the kids. If I had gotten into the minivan/mcmansion discussion I would broken out in hives.

Yeah, there's no way in hell I could teach high school (and it would get worse at lower levels)--I just don't have the people skills; I would get too impatient. I'm poretty much stuck at this level.
I am always careful to place time boundaries on my teaching. Basically, you can expend an infiite amount of time on it, so I set limits so I can have a life outside school. Of course, I don't really *have* a life outside school, but it's not because of a lack of free time.

Yeah, I guess it depends on your perspective--you actually do something useful, so I dunno. Since I want to teach, the PhD is the only way to go...

I see your point about school, which is a good way to meet people. But there's a downside--when I went through that shit last year, both my personal and professional relationships largely unravleld, because most of my close friends were all part of the same professional circle. It's important to have nutliple communities and spaces to reatreat to, I learned the hard way...

Yeah. The snow and wind were just right to keep us from flyiong all day, so the phones rang off the hook all damn day and we had to keep telling people to check back in and try to schedule them all tomorrow.
