The Netherlands, like any civilized country, has its share of family tragedies. Actually, the word 'civilized' is rather ironic, as there is usually nothing civil about them.
Last week, a divorced man murdered his ex-wife and drove himself and their two children, aged 8 and 10, halfway across the country to kill them and then commit suicide. My heart explodes with a mixture of pain, rage and sadness every time I read about something like this, especially when (small) children are involved.
What makes me ready to grab a flamethrower and violently purge the genepool though is a news report in a national newspaper detailing how a neighbor was walking past the apartment where the man murdered his ex-wife and was approached by a scared little boy who told her that she needed to help him because his father was killing his mother.
She thought it was a joke and walked on, the child in tow pleading with her to believe him. A few hours later this 8 year old boy was being cremated in his mother's Ford Ka, along with his 10 year old sister and his asshole father.
What kind of total fuckwad thinks a child is joking when it says someone is killing its mother?
It seems every month brings another kid in this country closer to his death because his father (and less often his mother) is a total loser who deals with the troubles of life by blowing his kids and (ex-)partner away.
