I've been in port authority twice. I was traveling by bus at the time, so I can't paint you a portrait of what the city is like socially. I basically saw it from behind glass.
Because I'm such a country mouse, it frankly scared the shit out of me. I'll go again sometime, but I tend to hate urban areas.
Port Authority is awful unless someone really important is in town and the government's involved. At times like that, the place is pristine.
Otherwise, there are vast groups of sketchy characters just gathered around and watching you pass. Not mortally frightening by even my standards, but still I felt the need to hang around while some lady, far too trusting, left her kids in their pajamas inside the terminal while she got her luggage for five minutes. What the fuck? Thirty seconds would've been too long.
Hope that's somehow helpful. Probably not, but I tried.
