cats are weird.
i've never been a cat person, having grown up with dogs and always having major allergy/asthma reactions to cats.
but, cats seem to like me, or are always drawn to me for some reason. like, sitting on me at friends' houses or following me down the street when i go for walks.
the only cat i ever bonded with was Beep, a cat i was catsitting for a friend for a few months. she played fetch, didn't spread poo-paw all over the kitchen counters, didn't meow (thus the name 'beep'), wasn't lickie (her way of giving affection was to press her nose lightly against me - like she knew my distaste for animal slobber all over me), and didn't trigger my allergies. when she adopted one of the mini-footballs from my armchair quarterback set, i was initially perturbed, until i saw how she carried it around in her teeth for a spur-of-the-moment game of fetch with me, or a bedtime snugglebuddie - i even let her take it when it was time for her to go back to her owner. and, after my knee surgery, she slept with her little paws on my forehead all night, as if to reassure me that she was watching over me.
but, a recent cat experience from a couple weeks ago really tops all other spookie cat encounters i've had. it was after a particularly bad evening with erikill when i left his place to go home. i was crying on the way to the car and had decided to sit in my car for a few to compose myself before driving. as i sat there letting the sobs subside, i felt something on the hood of my car. looking up, i saw a cat had jumped onto it and was irritated because i hate pawprints on my car, especially freshly washed (which it was). however, i went back to the business of crying and drying my eyes since it _just_ _didn't_ _matter_.
not a minute later i felt something so i looked up again. this time, the cat had it's face pressed against the glass of the car and was staring straight at me. as soon as i made eye contact with it, it started clawing at the windshield like it was trying to dig through to the inside, never taking its eyes away from mine.
as weird as its behavior was, it was nothing compared to the next thing that caught my attention and sent chills down my spine. the cat was wearing a dog-tag style nametag around its neck. its name was the same name as the court where i lived in bakersfield before coming back up here - i won't say what the word is because other people live there who i'm sure wouldn't appreciate me giving away the location of their sanctuary, but it's not a word i've ever heard a cat be named before.
i sat there trying to contemplate the cosmic meaning of this feline being of the same name as that last place i really felt at home in and still miss so much every single day while also seeming so concerned about my emotional state and wanting to get in to where i was. as i sat in stunned silence, the sobs not even a memory, the cat went to the passenger side of the car and, hanging over the edge, started digging at the side window as it tried to push through a small opening at the top, or to push it down further to make room to get in.
i put my keys in the ignition so i could put the window down further when erikill came to my window, scaring the cat away. i haven't seen the cat since, but can't get over how eery the whole thing was.
damn spooky cats.
