Regarding Healthcare Reform

I'm not pushing for legislation to be passed, until the problem has been properly sorted out, and a consensus can be reached. However . . . . . Lest we forget . . . . the big insurance companies, that pay the lobbyists and maintain a stranglehold on U.S. healthcare . . . have always been, and will continue to be, For Profit companies! They keep the costs high, in order to sustain huge salaries, benefits, and bonuses, as well as a financial return to the shareholders. It isn't until we come up with an alternative that takes the uncontrolled compensation and profit layers out of the equation, that the cost of healthcare will ever go down, and become truly affordable by the middle and lower classes. A controlled, not for profit alternative (public option), that offers reasonable compensation to both its employees and providers, just might stand a chance of succeeding. It would be interesting to see the reaction, over time, of the insurance companies, if people decided they've had enough, and switched to the alternative.

My own situation . . . I'm currently unemployed. I buy medical insurance via COBRA, through my previous employer's provider. As of the end of this month, they will be billing me a little over $1,100 per month, to continue my insurance for the two of us. Is over $13,000 a year reasonable for just your medical insurance? Especially for folks on limited income? Hell no! I'm shopping for a cheaper alternative, as we speak. I sure hope I can find one, before its too late! Am I looking for work? Sure. Will I find something that provides medical insurance? Who knows! Maybe, Maybe not. The point I'm trying to make is . . . just look how serious this can be at current rates, and how fast it can take away everything you own in a very short time. And would you risk going without insurance? Not if you own anything!
