In the fight over whether I go to Alabama to support FEMA or stay here, it ended up as a split decision. I will be staying locally for the moment, except for a few trips to kick off the various phases of clean up and reconstruction.
This does come as a bit of a relief since the initial 30 day commitment would have interfered with not only friends visiting, but potentially my sister having her baby. I don't think should would ever have forgiven me if I were 2000 miles away turning a swamp back in to a city while she was giving birth.
For the most part, I have been spending my time either working or packing for my move. Even sleep has seemed optional lately. About the only social thing I have done in weeks is attend a friends birthday party . . . after which I prompty returned to work, even though it was 10pm.
Tomorrow is going to be a bit of a fun day though. A week ago we did some testing that involved fire and a 40ft metal tower with probes attached to the top. The probes are still attached but everyone associated with the project is afraid of heights and won't climb up to retrieve them. Since I have clearance to get on the site and a wee bit of climbing experience, I am being driven out to the site to spend a few hours playing . . . I mean working to retrieve the probes.
I am sure I will do my best to give everyone on the ground a heart attack with my antics.
