Today I ran the Camp Pendelton Mud Run.
I woke up this morning at 4:30am to get my little striped butt fed and ready for a day of fun. I met up with my co-workers who were also running the race and on to the Marine Base.
Since I was running in the individual class, my start time was 15 minutes before the teams and I decided just to take off running instead of sitting on my rump to wait for the rest of the group.
The crowded start was quickly broken up after the first 1/2 mile as we came around the corner to find a few Marines with firehoses aimed at us. Some paniced, some fled . . . dumb ass me charged right in.
This is where I learned a very good lesson. This lesson is when you are wearing a 'Safety Orange' (better know as OMG, TURN THAT SHIRT OFF orange) everyone sees you. Yes, the Marines with the firehoses saw me alright . . . and too aim. Where most people at this stage only get a slight squirting, I got hit full force by three hoses at once, knocked back and drenched.
Continuing ahead, we hit the sand pits soon followed by the first river crossing. Most people slowed up for the river but, once again, I charged right in and made it acorss with little hold up. Hitting the second sand pit all nice and wet made things . . . interesting.
The next obstacle was hay bales to climb over. Once again, charged ahead, danced over the tops of them and kept right on going. A few hills . . . some more sand . . . another river crossing and FINALLY I got to the fun part - THE MUD!!!!
The first big mud dive was a 2ft deep pit filled with the stuff and a 5ft tall wall smack in the middle. Climb the wall, dive in to the mud on the other side. Lots of fun. Following that was a resivour crossing . . . about 4ft deep and 200ft long in which I timely announced in the middle of a crowd "Hey, is that a warm spot I just felt?"
There were some tires t jog through, a big plastic sewer pipe to crawl through, another mud wall to get over and then the big one - suicide hill. A 200ft climb up a muddy hill with yet more Marines at the top with a firehose. This time the safety orange clad, mud covered goofball made sure to dodge behind other people before he could be sprayed.
From there until the last few hundred feet was mostly down hill. It went fast and soon I was at the last obstacle - the mud crawl. This is where you get down on your belly in 2ft of mud and drag yourself under a bunch of flags for about 50ft. I liked it!
A quick jog across the finish line and I was done. Just over an hour to run the 6.2 miles.
I found a picture . . .
