I wouldn't say I'm an experienced gardener, but I am getting better at it with each year. I think I used to always over- or under-water plants. They can't talk, goddammit, and that complicates matters. I think I'm at the point where I'm no longer having watering crises. My best friend, Brynn, has a large roof, so she and her boyfriend like to grow a lot of edible plants and vegetables. I realized that's just the easiest thing to grow. I don't live by the farmer's market anymore, so I might as well make my own. So far, my success stories for the year are:
* Mini chili peppers
* Beets
* Cilantro (which died after it fell down the fire escape, so that's an EX-success story)
* Dill (not a big fan but it grows so well)
* Zinnia (tons of them!)
* Catnip (the kitties will feast on it this fall and winter)
* Onion (I pulled one out of the fridge and planted it, and it immediately took to growing)
* Radish
* Chives
* Green beans
* Sunflowers
* Annato
All of the above are growing in containers -- no garden.
I seem to be failing in the carrot- and okra-growing departments. I also am waiting to see how my watermelon plants come along, but if they are viable I could regeret it. They grow out of control, which could be tricky for an apartment situation. It also makes leaving town for more than a few days tricky. I got so pissed those two times I came back from a trip and had dead plants because the person cat-sitting didn't pay attention to them. I had an ex-boyfriend who didn't water any of my plants when I was away one time, and when I came back and saw them all dead, I cried. I become so attached to anything living, especially if I raised it by hand. I never even threw out pitiful plants until they were absolutely beyond the point of salvation: "Little plant, do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?"
