When people say they're into punk these days - who exactly are they talking about? If I'm out of touch, so is everyone else I know but I just can't imagine that some of the stuff that I've heard passed off as punk being the type of stuff that has the following that punk seems to have right now. I'm all about the tattoos and piercings and whatever. But all this "fucking hardcore" stuff -- what's up?

What constitutes punk? How would you tell the difference between punk and, say, modern garage rock?...or emocore or whatever the fuck else...I just don't get it. Someone teach me. That way if I'm gonna' sneer at least I'll know what the hell I'm sneering at.

I like aaaall kinds of music and I know that everyone says that but goddammit, I do. Punk is the only thing that I feel slips under my radar. That and new country...but that's a given. Old country is at the root of everything, right? And before that blues and roots blues, right? I'm weak on my classic rock (Zepplin, stuff like that) but I appreciate it's place. It's just not what I want to hear unless I'm high and kicked back lookin' at the laser show at the planetarium (...and really, even then...). But punk...*shakes fist in air*...Damn you punk! You continue to elude me. I mean, what - the Ramones? That's not punk, right? The Sex Pistols - that was punk and I own Never Mind the Bullocks but one or two listens is all it's ever got from me. I mean- jeeeesus - we're not talking shit like NoFX, are we? And if that's punk that's some poppy punk if you ask me.

The subculture. Is this it...here...suicide girls? I think I dig the look and hate the attitude. It SEEMS to be one of your more elitist genres of music - agressively so, which is not something you can say about, shoe-gazing stuff...it might be elitist, but in the same way that high school band nerds are with their own private jokes and tight 'it's a band thing' cliques. Punks, in my experience are either all excess (drink, drink, drink) or of the straight edge variety. Straight edge punks are like Mormons but without the sense of humor. I don't know...just had to ask. Someone set me straight.

Or not.
