Back from Denmark. It is done, we spread some of her ashes by the grave of her favorite poet and the rest in the sea. It was a brilliant day, beautiful, poetic. We went there at sunrise, dressed in colourful tracksuit pants, turquoise, red, green, some clutching bottles of champagne, I was carrying a tray of strawberries and plastic cups. The grieving family and friends walking along a white beach together, footprints in the wet sand, the sunrise, a sun so big, so red, I almost couldn't keep my eyes from it, we drank champagne, played her favorite song and cried, I sobbed into my mothers shoulder, she in mine, some threw all their clothes off and ran into the sea, at the tip in Skagen two seas meet, Skagerak and Kattegat, I stood with one foot in each sea, I remember doing it last year, at the same time, sunrise, but my aunt was there with me.
I didn't cry at the memorial service we had in May, it felt so cold, so unlike her, unreal. This, on the other hand, felt so intimate, so right, could it have been more beautiful? A clear sky, sunrise, a white beach.. This was what she wanted.
It was such a beautiful experience, the sight of my cousins out in the sea, the sun in front of them, turning them into a dark silhouette, spreading her ashes into a sea shimmering like a million diamonds.. That is etched into my mind, it is a precious memory worth more than anything. It could have been a movie.
That is the remains of my aunt, in a red spaghetti box. Some find it morbid, I find it hillarious!
