2004 wants some sympathy and understanding as it departs.

Can we muster up any?

On the last day of the year, well more than 100,000 people are dead from earthquakes and tsunamis in the Indian Ocean. The scale of the disaster is incomprehensible. Other poor victims are being blown up by car bombs, strafed by bombers, and sent off on suicide martyr missions, all in the name of misguided religions or misappropriated government powers. The polar ice caps are melting at an alarming pace. Habitat is being destroyed worldwide. Intolerance and indifference reign supreme. Political systems are broken.

The world seems to be increasingly Darwinian. Yet is it all the fault of poor 2004? Or is 2004 just reaping the whirlwind of choices made in 1994, and 1984, and 1974? Who knows?
It doesn't help to be bitter, angry, hopeless, or indifferent. It's no good to let woes and worries consume us. Live your life, flabbergasted at the contradictions, grateful for your blessings( which are many)--and don't try to figure it all out. Don't give up on joy, peace, justice, and love.

The violence caused by nature is beyond repair. The violence caused by mankind will stop when people stop putting up with it. Maybe 2005 will be that year?
