I just spun Gil Scott-Heron's Winter In America. Such an amazing record! It's an incredibly powerful slice of black America from 1974. The interesting thing is to experience a piece of black culture that is pre-hip hop. Hip hop is the most omnipresent, culture defining movement of the last century. Virtually every single element of African American culture today is a reflection of or influenced by hip hop. So the energy and vibe of the Gil Scott-Heron would be really alien to anyone under twenty that grew up in the hip hop era. It's refreshing to revisit that time. It's intense and serious. Corporations wanted little to do with black culture then, so it's real and raw and cool. No Twix commercials, no Bentleys, no bling...

Oh my God, I just spun the new Nurse With Wound record Salt Marie Celeste. It's unbelievable!! One 62 minute track that sounds like Brian Eno, Hellraiser, ritual music, a haunted hospice, Coil and a creaky gate. A Brothers Quay movie for the headphones.

Mtlqueen sent me this killer Alder and Elius record that I'm spinning for the third time right now. There's a great sample of a girl going "My Vagina!" over and over. She sounds so empowered...it's classic! I luvs the vag! I couldn't put some of my very, very favorite SG's in my fave pics section because it's a love letter to the vag and the beautiful SG's that bless us with them. If you think that's crass, you're wrong. I respect you, but you're still wrong.
