Los Angeles is such a strange place. It's ability to offend people is really funny to me. It's common to hear people speak of it like it's a sentient being, rather than a geographical location. "It did this and it did that.." People don't trust it and would never let it date their daughters.
I find LA entertaining and psychotic and yeah, sad sometimes...or maybe tragic is a better word. Some of the dreams people chase out here are really naive and wrong minded. I'm naive. I'll admit it. I'm from a tiny farm town in southern Illinois that had one stop light and no high school. After my mom divorced my dad, she moved in with an actual pig farmer! We're talking rural...
So, thirteen years out here now, and I'm still kinda wide eyed and entertained by the whole experience. It's not for everyone. I just think I've retained enough of a sense of humor to really connect with it.
Steve Martin said he felt the need to write a love letter to the city, LA Story, just because people shit on it non stop. There's a line in there, by Sarah Jessica Parker's "LA ditz" character, where she's staring out at the Pacific ocean and she says "Do you ever wonder why all the water doesn't just fly up into the sky?"

I actually thought SJParker was attractive in that movie

Anyway, Oneida played in these people's big sweaty loft and the first song was "sheets of easter" which i'd never heard before its on their last record -- basically they chant the same word over and over again on top of these repeating riffs for like 8 minutes before there finally is a chord change, and it's really loud. I coulda sworn they were singing "Life life life life!" and after what had just happened, it was just the most amazing, cathartic thing, I fucking was like laughing and crying at the same time I think, so yeah before that I just thought they were like Can meets Deep Purple or whatever I had no idea how great they could be and of course that situation was extraordinary...
