Blog HW - What is something you wish you'd learned sooner?

Heeeeey everyone!

@missy @rambo

So today's post is about the thing I wish I'd learned sooner, and I really hope it will be helpful for you too :)

Through my eating disorder recovery struggle, I've been battling with my weight obviously. But tbh, I don't think you have to be suffering from a full blown ED like bulimia or anorexia to have a problem with this : body weight.

Hopefully, the "body positivity" community is raising awareness nowadays, and I find this really helpful when I struggle. But the one concept that really opened my eyes for good was what is called "the set point theory".

What is it, exactly ?

Well, to sum up, we all have a weight our bodies are made for. So if you're under your set point, you will be starving all the time/have constant hunger pangs and crazy cravings. and On the contrary, if you're overweight, you will feel less hungry throughout the day. Moreover : if you're overweight or underweight BUT dieting like crazy and cutting on essential nutrients, your body will send you those signals too (mostly through cravings or in my case, urges to binge eat). I think it's easier said than done, because sometimes we don't really tune into our bodies sensations and listen to our signals of real hunger, but if we do, then it becomes obvious. And so helpful.

If you're struggling with an eating disorder, relying on hunger cues is nearly impossible in the first place because you have trained yourself to ignore it for too long so at first you have to eat by the clock. But once that's done, you can try eating intuitively, aka : listen to your hunger cues to eat or not eat.

A good book on the subject is the Intuitive eating one, by the way.

So that's it for today. I think the dieting obsession is useless and a lost struggle because we can't fight our natural set points. Our bodies will always do what it takes to lead us to the number on the scale we are made for.

So enjoy your meals <3 eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, and put that scale in the trash. That's what I'm aiming for :)

Love,Clem
