My grandmother passed this morning, peacefully and in her sleep.
If I had my way we'd do something along these lines. Private, powerful and deeper than descriptions can encompass. Instead I'm going to have to shake hands with and listen to platitudes from a bunch of people I don't know, none of whom ever visited her in the nursing home.
She outlived her friends by a few years, and died with no one other than her daughter and two grandkids. To my knowledge, she never forgave or made peace with her own family, or that of her husband. I never knew him, he passed before I was born.
My brother told me today how glad he was that he'd taken a couple of years away from his life to connect with this old woman and be there for her. Respect due.
I won't miss her, but I mourn her and I honor her and if there is any hurt left in me with her fingerprints on it, I give it back to God, because it was never mine in the first place.
