When I lived in Los Angeles, I fucking hated it. I have to say that I hated pretty much everything about the city, from the tips of its dying palm trees to the crust under the fingernails of the insufferable young white actors.
Just as I had achieved escape velocity, and could measure my remaining tour of duty in weeks rather than months, I met my buddy Blake. Blake was hella cool, he was also a DJin fact, we used to listen to each other practice across the alleyway separating our apartments before wed even met. He disliked LA as wellhe was a New Yorker to the coreso he moved to SF with me and eventually went on to sound design school and (I hope) bigger and much better things.
Blakes father is Jack Douglas, a well-known record producer who made the albums that more or less defined my pre-adolescence. In the summer of 1983, I would attend a Black Flag concert and sell my soul to punk rock, but in the early 80s, it was still all about Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and . . . Zebra.
Who? Exactly.
When I visited Jacks home in NY, there were gold and platinum records everywhere, but I saw this little gold record in the back corner of the guest-house. I found Jack and gushed, holy shit, you produced ZEBRA!! Tell Me What You Want, and Whos Behind the Door were my favorite songs in 1983, and I used to stay up late listening to the local rock radio station, because Zebra was only in their after-midnight rotation. I was supposed to be asleep, so Id have my little transistor radio under the covers with the volume so low no one else could hear. Im sure I fell asleep more often than not, but ohmygodthatsmyfavoritesong.
I think Jack thought I was fucking nutsI wasnt bugged about the John Lennon or Aerosmith records, for me it was Zebra. He looked at me like I was crazy, but fuck that, the album was actually pretty good. Last week, I downloaded two of their songs from iTunes and Ive been listening to them over and over, remembering back when sounding like Led Zeppelin was about the best thing a band could do as far as I was concerned.
FUCKING ROXXOR

It is actually MASK OF THE GREAT DECEIVER that kicked ass. Worth the entire rest of the album. Probably the kind of song I listen to now and say "what was I smoking to think this was so great?"

I like to walk around this city with my friends late at night, write captions on photographs I take, cook, read, drink fancy martinis, and think about the future. I like to camp in forests, swim in lakes, and live on the west coast. I like to learn (especially Latin, even though it's somewhat intimidating), dream, and cuddle.
I.. yeah, that's about it right now. I'm in school full-time and I work twenty-odd hours a week. That's what I actually do.
Is that a sufficient answer?
