From CNN
A Florida scientist has developed a "brain" in a glass dish that is capable of flying a virtual fighter plane and could enhance medical understanding of neural disorders such as epilepsy.
The "living computer" was grown from 25,000 neurons extracted from a rat's brain and arranged over a grid of 60 electrodes in a Petri dish.
The brain cells then started to reconnect themselves, forming microscopic interconnections, said Thomas DeMarse, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Florida.
"It's essentially a dish with 60 electrodes arranged in a dish at the bottom," explained DeMarse, who designed the study.
"Over that we put the living cortical neurons from rats, which rapidly begin to reconnect themselves, forming a living neural network -- a brain."

And so it begins. Within a few years we will have smart devices partially or entirely controlled by pseudo-intelligences, demi-consciousnesses designed to perform specific tasks; to patrol your house and keep dust off your computer equipment, play with your children and teach them to count, or help your car slow itself down as it approaches intersections.
Over time, the Things will get confused, and make self-defeating neural connections. They will begin to behave erratically, and have to be replaced. They will go mad and (if well-built) eventually become senile. In the case of smart childrens toys, this will probably be cute.
Hippies will protest against their use, and geeks will get very wealthy making them.
Most of the Things will be useful and appreciated, but I want a special Thing. My Thing will answer all of my spam email. It will work through the spam folder piece by piece when my computer hibernates, and it will offer really polite replies relating directly to the emails content:
Thank you for your considerate suggestion. Your d1rty f@rm slutz sound very appealing, but at this time I am very happy with my existing f1lthy an1mal fuck1ng wh0r3.
Your all natural herbal breast enhancement program sounds very intriguing. May I request a brochure?
Thank you for your consideration. I am not at this time interested in a home-based business that will net me well over $10,000.00 per month for only minutes a day.
