omg, i remember well the decade-ago days of my white, raised-middle-class, punk ass boyfriend smearing dirt all over his face when he lined up to apply for GA (general assistance, aka welfare for those out-of-the-loop types). i don't think he was going for a blackface schtick. he wasn't quite that stupid, even then . . . just stupid enough to think that a ridiculously dirty face meant you were poor. o, the humor, the shame-by-association, the memories.
