That feeling of Obamatism...

No matter where you stand politically, you have to admire how this nation celebrated on election day. And not just this nation, all around the world there was celebration. Around 8 PM west coast time, I could hear people in my neighborhood in cheering! People were coming out of their homes and screaming for joy. It reminded me of when I was in Detroit and they won the World Series and everyone came out of their houses to celebrate. I watched Obama's speech three times and teared up every single time. I wonder what kind of puppy his kids will get?!

And I'm such a geek, watching the montage of footage from parts of the globe far and wide, all I could think about was how much it reminded me of the end of the special edition of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

You know, all the fireworks, pulling down that giant statue of George Bush and seeing that poor Stormtrooper uniform thrown over the heads of the crowd, I think they took it a little too far. smile Kidding.

Anyway, I'm not just happy that Obama won, I'm pleased for a few other reasons.

1) Travel. Okay, I can finally travel to other countries and proudly say, "Yes. I am from the United States of America." No longer will I have to pose as a Canadian. Not that I ever did that.

2) The news. Perhaps watching the news won't be as stressful or depressing.

3) Science is back. I could not believe how many Republican candidates did not believe in evolution. So sad. Anyway, if we can put a man on the moon, we can invent something to cheaply and efficiently power personal vehicles. There are so many things we take for granted now that came from NASA's space program (krazy glue, the VCR, velcro) that putting effort behind and creating incentives for business to move from gas powered vehicles will only result in good things.

4) Old politics is dead. This country wasn't fooled again by hateful political rhetoric that seemed tired along with candidates that are better suited for a moronic reality show than the political arena (Sarah Palin).

Gay Marriage headed to Supreme Court?
One very sad development is the state of California's effort to take rights away from Gay couples who wish to marry. I believe this always should have been an issue for the courts to decide since you can't always count on folks to do the right thing, so if this is something you really care about as well, sign this petition to repeal prop 8 and then encourage your friends to do the same thing.

Oh, and I really want to get this t-shirt... because I am still a big geek. biggrin

Yes we can.
Chris

P.S. And for your amusement, here's a round up of political cartoons which ran the day after the election...
