2 things that i like: "will and grace" and rice krispies treats.
so i completed an...unusual...project today. *warn the following may disturb some people..it involves dead animal*
about 5-6 weeks ago, at the end of my field season, there was a terrible day where one of our turtle traps was dislodged and rolled into deep water, drowning the poor turtles in it. it sucked really bad, but we went ahead and sampled tissues and dissected, etc. one was a large snapping turtle. i decided that i wanted to keep his shell and skeleton.
so i put him in the fridge in the lab to figure out how to go about this task...
and it became like that container of leftovers in the back of your fridge that you just don't want to deal wtih and the longer time goes on the worse it gets and the more you don't want to deal with it!!!! *whew!*
but i really wanted the final product...so, i finally got myself worked up to it. with the help of my good friend, i constructed a "rot box." a "decay chamber" if you will. mesh on 4 sides, wood on 2, to put out in the woods, far off in the deep woods, tied to a tree. it allows the detritivores (bacteria, flies, worms, etc) in but doesn't allow larger animals to tear it up and carry it away. in 6 months or so, i will return to a nice clean skeleton, partially fused to a solid shell, beautiful and revealing of these majestic creatures' inner secrets.
yeah, i know, who's a freakazoid wierdo, science dork? yep, uh huh....
but it will be SO COOL!!
***p.s. i give total trademark rights and creative inspiration to my science dork compadre, the Grendel one!! a modified bee-box was how he described his version, my inspiration! he understands!
[EDIT] i totally forgot to mention how ungodly nasty the carcass was after having been deceased for so long...ugh...but i wore gloves, and a clothespin on my nose (literally) when i put it in the rotbox (tm) and did a huge bong hit afterwards to soothe my assaulted senses. it was BAD. but still worth it!!
