I'm in the 'burbs of Minneapolis tonight, well kinda. I'm in Clearwater, Minnesota, about 45 minutes away. I had din-din at a nice little diner inside the Petro 2 truck stop. The Place is called Nelson Brothers. It's a nice change from the Iron Skillet chain that most of the Petros have. I had a nice sirloin steak with baked potato, green beans, and homemade bread from the on-site bakery. The steak was very tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly to my requested medium rare. The green beans were obviously from the freezer and were just so-so. The baked potato wasn't so hot either and had probably been held in a warmer for too long. The homemade bread was nice though, with a nice crust and soft crumb, and lots of little holes to hold in the whipped butter. All said, dinner was pretty decent, but I'd like a fresher veggie and starch next time. Looking around at other diner's meals, the entrees and sandwiches looked very mouthwatering. The best part of my meal by far, was the dessert. The pie case at the front of the restaurant caught my eye from the minute I walked in. I knew from the beginning that I was destined for overtime calories. My lovely waitress, an Ashley Olsen look alike with cute gapped teeth brought the menu back to me for my dessert selection. After several tense moments, I selected the strawberry-rhubarb pie, warmed, a la mode. Tres yum-yum. Jesus, these mid-west yokels can bake. My homemade pie of utmost scrumptiousness arrived in a mere two minutes paired with two scoops of French vanilla ice cream. The tender flaky crust gave way to the sweet, tart goodness contained within. My mouth puckered then orgasmed as the sour note of the rhubarb dissolved as the sugary sweetness kicked in and mellowed further by the melting ice cream. By this time I was rock hard. Okay, not really. the pie is first rate. But And... holy shit, these Minnesota babes make my boxers itch. I still don't know why anyone would live here after experiencing the most recent winter, but they obviously comfort themselves with delicious food and by breeding gorgeous women.
Besides the restaurant, the travel center has a bakery, sandwich and pizza shop, a convenience store, a gift shop featuring Carhartt clothing, and the usual trucker shit. It's located at I-94, exit 178, Clearwater, Minnesota.
