Politics. . . can anyone make any sense of it?

So this time around I've decided to get more involved in the presidential election. I didn't vote in the last one because I didn't feel like either candidate really had my best interest. I didn't feel it was right to just choose the lesser of two evils. Now I have done some thinking and wonder if, other than myself, can anyone ever really have my best interest? I've labeled myself independent because my views seem to sway back and forth from typical liberal and conservative stand points. This makes it rather difficult to choose one candidate over the other. Do I just choose what is most important to me and give up what's also important but not as much. I feel like that's compromising myself. And when I say important to me I don't mean my personal agenda, but what I feel will be the best for people as a whole.

Also I've tried researching the candidates to see where the stand on issues and now I'm even more confused. Maybe I'm just lazy but I'd love to find a non-bias source that says "John Mccain voted for this, this and this, and voted against this. And here is what Barack Obama supports and rejects." Yes, I have found some sites that show voting records, but understanding the laws and bills voted on is another story. I kind of get what the law/bill is but its filled with so much legal speak that I'm still just as confused as to what the heart of it is.

Honestly I don't think one person as president can make a difference even if they stuck to exactly what they said they would do. Everything is so controlled by special interest, its hard for one person to make a change.

If anyone has anything to offer (agreeing/opposing arguments, sources to research) I'm listening.
