has anyone seen alexandre aja's new flick, "mirrors"?

i saw it a couple days ago, expecting it to be another popcorn horror movie with no plot and loaded with mindless jump-scares. well...i was right. it's another super-polished horror movie, but i have to admit it was better than i expected.

there was no real sense of dread and i wasn't genuinely scared at any point, except for those 13 seconds before something jumped out from a darkened corner, but i thought the film's concept was pretty good, kiefer sutherland was decent (minus a few over-the-top moments), and KNB's effects were great. the first major gore effect (which i won't spoil here) was really beautiful. i have a lot of respect for the KNB guys, they do amazing work.

what happens to these directors when they enter the hollywood scene? do they simply loose their edge? or are they buying into the current extreme-gore trend? it happened here with aja, his last couple films were barely average when compared to "high tension" and it definitely happened with eli roth, hostel 1 and 2 paled in comparison to the genius of "cabin fever". who knows? i know carpenter and craven started out with masterpieces, "halloween" and "last house on the left" respectively, and they've both had a few flops in their careers, but they've also managed to turn out some great films over the years. perhaps it's just too soon to judge this new crop of genre filmmakers, i guess we'll have to wait and see...

here's the "mirrors" trailer for anyone who hasn't seen it yet...

I liked Mirrors quite a bit. I thought it was above average for what is coming out... It's no High Tension, but still entertaining. I recommend seeing "Inside", if you haven't. It seems only Europeans are making any horror worth watching lately...
