Free music video tapes for you:
REM - Tourfilm
Radiohead - Seven Television Commercials
Morrissey - Hulmerist
Morrissey - Live in Dallas
The Sex Pistols - Rock and Roll Swindle
Very simple; if you know me, or if you send me your postal address, any or all of the above are yours.
So far- no takers.... or maybe Crux's mom.
Last week's CD purchases. On top of the many music tapes to watch, I'm a bit overwhelmed this week.
via an EBay store:
Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) Having written this off as an "expensive import" for years, it's taken me surprisingly long to figure out trying to get it cheap online. I've had Trout Mask forever, of course, but beyond that ony a cheapo-cassette of early blues stuff ("Zig Zag Wanderer," "Electricity") and (when I was buying lots of Zappa in 2003) Bongo Fury (which is pretty ehh).
Roland Kirk, Rip Rig and Panic/ Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith - I was reading a jazz guide at work which, whatever their reservations about his material's wildness, they said he was one of the best soloists ever... now, I like wildness and slopiness, thanks, so I figured I should check this out, especially since it's a cheap two-for-one.
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gimme Back My Bullets - I already knew 5 of the songs were good; last night I came to find the other 4 are good too. 9 out of 9 ain't bad. Plus two live versions for BoNuS on the CD. Only complaint is the demo version of "Trust" and "All I Can Do Is Write About It" are better, but then I think the latter is common knowledge, since I burnt it off a greatest-hits CD from Arlington Library.
Yes, Yesshows - I just listened to some this morning and I think I was a lil too spaced out to really enjoy it. Not as easily accessible as some of the early stuff, but no biggie, I just have to let it sink in before judging.
from the used/new CDepot store in College Park:
Guided by Voices, Under the Bushes, Under the Stars
Ozric Tentacles, Waterfall Cities/ The Hidden Step
Phish, LivePhish 8: E Centre New Jersey, 7/10/99
Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure
Voivod, Voivod
Ween, Quebec
Yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans
Robert Pollard said UtB,UtS is one of his 5 fave GbV albums in a recent interview. Ozric Tentacles are a band I'd heard a song by; they seem to do pretty freaky Zappa stuff and lack much fame here but I think they're popular in England (?); this double-album CD cost $14. The Phish show I listened to over the weekend; it's great, one of their better albums, I think. Cherry tape me "In Every Dream Home, a Heartache" but said she didn't think any other RM was good... but it's Eno, and it was $11 so I had to at least check out one of the Eno-era albums. Voivod with Newsted from Metallica doing (what sounded on Amazon clips like) punky/punchy songs- had to check it out eventually. Ween- listened to half of last night... it's weird, it's stylistically all over the place, it's Ween. Listened to the first two Topographic Oceans songs on the drive back from the store. The first was really good, kinda reminding me of Todd Rundgren's "International Feel" in small ways; the second seemed okay.
I think I might've just wasted half the morning typing stuff nobody cares about. :^/ ...anyway, that is what I bought in the last week. 11 CDs, or 16 if you count all the double-length stuff.
Now I just have to stay offline or away from the TV and books (and goddamned work) long enough to listen to it all...
------------------------------------------------------------------
punkrockjuliette asked for the Pistols movie, and I threw in the punk video comp which I'd watched last night and this morning- interesting Iggy Pop live performance, old Pistols video of "Anarchy" (which sorta cuts off without ending... it looks like they were on some BBC show and just extended the song past where it should end [on purpose] and got the plug pulled)... Moz goes to Crux's mom since JuneCleavage didn't act fast enough to jump on her fave performer's videos.... now I just need to figure out whether TarNish really wants Radiohead, or NoControl gets it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I realized last night that I could (I think) dub the Radiohead and give to to both parties (I need to make sure the family VCR is functional, at least to play; word was it wasn't recording, but that doesn't matter)...

When are you going to Rehoboth? I love it over there. My parents are retiring to that area when they return from their 2-year stint abroad. Anyway, I wouldn't mind catching up with Cruxy and yourself there, if'n that's alright with youse guys.
As I have mentioned, I am newly single again and should have more time for hanging out and the like. Actually, I'd really like to organize a road trip with some people to...somewhere cool...I don't know where. NYC is always fun, but its cost-prohibitive for the student-types we know. Hell, maybe we all just head to the beach or the mountains, drink bourbon and beer and act stupid for a couple of days. That could be entertaining.
Oh, I would argue that RM's Avalon was a pretty decent record, but I suppose that's stating the obvious. How is that new Voivod record? I hadn't even heard that Newstead joined the band. A quick check of the band's website also explains that original vocalist Snake is back in the fold. Very cool! I may have to check that one out, myself. Does it make me one of the musically unwashed masses to say that I downloaded Trout Mask Replica and Bat Chain Puller recently, but couldn't get into either one? We can't all be "cool" like that, eh?
