bonus additional updates- 6/17/05 evening
I have a lot I wanna write about and no time at all to do it. I'm at work, then going to the doctor's to check out the allergy possibility (actually, I'm sure I'll just get a recommendation to go to some specialist joker to tell me what's really going on), then back here to work, then dinner and the Black Cat thing tonight, then work tomorrow then dinner then Rockbot.
Last night's show was pretty good. I saw drjmd but temporarily- that guy is definitely the doctor on the go. Never in one place for more than a minute! I tried Laphroaig and Red Breast at an Irish place. Laphroaig (like other scotches) tastes pretty Anbesol-y (and has the same effect after a few glasses, I'm sure). Red Breast, despite the protestations of Dr J, I have to sum up in two words- cat piss. We've had a few male cats in my family. I know what cat piss smells like. Do I know what it tastes like? No, but if I had to bet my life on it, I'd say Red Breast whiskey. This kid is sticking with bourbon. Hopefully later I'll have time to write more about Lez Zeppelin and Michael Chabon's recent NY Review of Books essay than about cat piss drinks. We'll see.
evening ps- Okay. I do not have a cold.
I do not have an allergy.
I have bronchitis. I've been going around for 3 weeks, working, playing, biking, vacationing, going to shows and drinking, with bronchitis.
I've had a headache all day. Bad night's sleep again (but better since I had some generic Unisom). Throat feels like crap. As a result, I'm not going to the Black Cat tonight. Sucks. I'd hoped to see NoControl, and of course the great Siv and her Sandwich... and I'm sure some other "groovy fuckers" are there tonight. Sorry, gang.
I hope to go to Rockbot... but really, if you have an all-day pressure headache, late-night loud music and cig smoke is not gonna allow a really rocking feeling.
You know, that's another nice thing about the Lez Zeppelin show- it was no smoking.
But they were like an hour late....
So, anyway, LEZ ZEPPELIN. Did the song remain the same? Yeah, pretty much. I want to start with my complaints and then get to the important stuff.
The Robert Plant woman wasn't trying to look like Robert Plant, damn it! I mean, isn't looking-alike part of being a cover band?? No? I just thought she needed, at least long curly ridiculously long blonde locks. She really seemed to be going for the-singer-from-Tesla looks or something. Well, she didn't have a very high voice either. She could sing, but she did not have that high wailing Robert voice that pleases people like hatefulerin so much. I was also a bit surprised by how few pieces the drummer's kit had. I know in the past I've marvelled at how the Deerhoof drummer has such a small kit... but I expect a Zeppelin drummer to have, you know, a kit like the guy in Freaks and Geeks...
Anyway, good stuff- they play really well. The bass player also played mandolin and keys. I am in love with the bass player. She has Carrie Brownstein hair and looks like Carrie Brownstein and Anka Radokovich. My only advice to her is to turn her bass up a lot louder on "Heartbreaker"... but she played great mandolin on "Going to California" (this seriously might be the best song they do) and great keys on "Your Time is Gonna Come". The Jimmy Page girl had the best look; no black curly hair, but a great white satin dragon-on-leg suit. The litmus test of Jimminess would have to be the solo break on "Heartbreaker," right? Yeah, she rocked that. The drummer, though small of drumkit, passed the Bonham test fine, too- the end of "Rock and Roll".
Oh, and Jimmy Page woman brought out 1) violin bow in "Dazed and Confused" and "How Many More Times" and 2) theremin in "Whole Lotta Love"... oh yeah, that's my other bit of advice to bass player- make more noise and crazy shit during "Whole Lotta Love". There's a lotta dead air to fill in that song... in fact, the singer should probably get a guitar just to tweak effects pedals during this part... or hell, maybe her own theremin. Dueling theremins. See folks, I think big. If you're a cover band, you've gotta top people's expectations; you have to take the original band one higher.
Didn't do "Stairway..." and I'm quite glad at that. Double-neck guitar was broken out, though- for "The Song Remains the Same." It rocked. I'm trying to think if they did any song bad, or mediocre.... I don't think so. I think they rocked it all.... I just hope the singer was just sick like me or something, cuz if she's singing Zeppelin she needs to be high-pitched. I don't think it's enough to just sing mid-range well.
I guess I'll save any other info for tomorrow's Journal; I might actually want to rest a bit tonight, and I gotta go Comment and such. I am feeling okay right now; I just had some Robitussin with codeine in it. I'm not hiiigh, I just finally feel a bit less congested.
