Smart Cheech/ Dumb Cheech
smart- I voted today. Virginia had some primaries for lieutenant governor and state senate. I got a newspaper section on candidates. They have some goddamned undemocratic rule now that you can't vote across party lines, you were forced to choose either a Democratic or Republican voting machine for all offices. I could give you a few pages, with this, corporate lobbyists, and electoral college for starters, about what a sham of a democracy this is, but anyway, I asked myself, which would do more good- voting for the most liberal Democrats or the most liberal Republicans? Well, we've seen how heavy liberals (Dean, Kucinich, Sharpton, Nader, etc.) fare in elections... so I decided to pick the Republicans with the least incendiery anti-gay and anti-abortion rhetoric in the newspaper section quotes.
I voted for Sean Connaughton for Lt. Gov., since under gay marriage he said simply, "I do not support legalizing same-sex marriage in Virginia," and under abortion he said, "The state should draft legislation which promotes respect for human life by banning partial-birth abortion." Now, if you think those are conservative, you should see what the other yahoos wrote. Stuff about constitutional amendments against same-sex marriage, banning adoption by gays, and defending the current Virginian (i.e. the most harsh US state) laws against gay rights from "liberals."
You can see where Connaughton's stances aren't very different from Kerry or (to use a hideous example) Lieberman, but note in his language 1) it's just partial-birth ones he's interested in banning, 2) he doesn't say anything about not cooperating with Dems to allow same-sex rights besides marriage, maybe being centrist enough to repeal the crappy "571" laws of last year which rolled back the rights of non-married couples.
As far as regular issues, Connaughton's for education, better transportation, preserving open space... but I mean, you knew that already. He's running for local office. I mean, what the fuck do you think he's gonna say?? That he's for establishing IBM missile silos in case of Venusian invasion, legalizing cathouses with craps tables, or for mandatory nipple clamps? They all say the same shit about the regular issues. Hell, the Democrats would too....
dumb- So when I pushed the button for Connaughton, I saw that uhhhh there were also candidates for governor and attorney general... uhh these weren't covered in the newspaper thing I read... and I don't watch or read local news cuz I hate it all (well, I dabble in DC city govt news in the Washington City Paper because it is "irreverent"), so I left those blank. I would like to be better-informed, but come on, TV news, The Northern Virginia Journal, Mount Vernon Gazette, and The Washington Post all eat a lot of ass. I have better things to read, like SG, MySpace, and LiveJournal.
