So I was finally listening to the lyrics of "Son of Orange County". I'm the type of person where I begin to hear the lyrics about the 12th time around. They're GREAT lyrics. Concise, to the point:

...and in your dreams,
you can...see...yourself...
as A PROPHET!.....

saving theee wooooorld,
....the words from your lips....
(I am not a crook)
I just can't believe......you aaaaare
such a fool

ah-ah-I just can't belieeeeeve
you are such a foooool
ah-ah-I just can't believeeeve
you are such a foooool....

and then Zappa just GOES TO TOWN on the guitar.

Speaking of shredding guitar, guess who's going to see Yo La Tengo in a couple weeks? I guess Yo La have their lions share of mellow moments, but (and I'm not kidding here) "The Evil That Men Do (Pablo's Version)" is easily one of the Ten Coolest Moments On Guitar Ever. I might make Ira blush, but it blows "Sister Ray" right outta the fuggin water. I don't think I can describe in words what Ira does to his guitar. It's not a solo, its' a massacre. He GOES COMPLETELY OUT and that's as close to a verbal description as I can come. Forced Exposure's review referred to it as "The Evil That Men Do (Black Ass Bone Version)" and that's what I've always called it ever since.

A bit of a review of a memoir I saw in the Post's Bookworld section:
"...a book that in no sense panders to the current appetite for confessional memoirs of childhood abuse or adult addiction. After struggling through the maunderings of innumerable memoirists who have little to offer the reader except self-pity (unpleasantly blended with self-promotion) and self-absorption, I find it an immense pleasure to be in the company of a certifiable adult who has reached the cusp of old age with precisely the right attitude: gratitude for the pleasures and satisfactions that life has granted him, wry resignation to its disappointments and defeats, and self-regard that is nicely topped off with self-mockery."
Something to think about when writing SG journals, I'd say (minus the, errr, "old age" part, eh souljacker?)

dream band of the day - Sweat Socks

MisterSatan - bass
me - guitar
Bailey - guitar
bravelilltoaster - vocals
Kikka - guitar, vocals
souljacker - drums

sounds like - X on X; Pussy Galore crossed with Negative Approach crossed with first-EP Meat Puppets and Black Flagged chaos, this is hardcore (not like Pulp).

Question of the Day

I remember when The Cult put out Electric. It was not unlike when Bob Dylan went electric; people freaked. I remember older folks sitting around the record store guessing which band The Cult were trying to rip off in each track; I thought there was a surfeit of Mott The Hoople in "Love Removal Machine", other folks said "AC/DC".
But the fans of the Love album were bugging. I will never forget the goth kid who wrote in to Spin complaining that (and I'll never forget the wording) "Every song has a mindless, headbanging guitar solo," and I thought, "...........well, fuck YEAH!" cuz it was mostly true (although to get really mindless you wanna check out a Nitro album). So my question to you is:

What is your favorite mindless, headbanging guitar solo?

Mine would be "Wild Flower", or VH's "Eruption", or the Velvet Underground's "I Heard Her Call My Name", or maybe "The Evil That Men Do (Black Ass Bone Version)".

Fave Zappa song?

Mine has to be either "Bobby Brown Goes Down", or "Joe's Garage".

YO LA TENGO!!! One of the best indie bands off all time, period. love

As for solos:

Metallica's "One" has always beenone of my favorite solo, for some reason. It's just so recognizable, every time I hear it. But anything Rick Nielson did for Cheap Trick is utter genius, as far as I'm concerned.

Or Maybe the solo in Radiohead's "Just", because I love it so...yeah, that's probably my fave solo, off the top of my head.

rubbersoul:
I try avoid "mindless headbanging guitar solos" whenever possible, so I would have to say that my favorites would be the ones I've never heard. I tend to like guitar solos of a more emotional, less technical and surely non-headbanging nature. Think Neil Young in "Like A Hurricane."
