Has it been 4 days since I updated? Seems like less.
Busy was Fri night. Good party at DC again. Dresden Dolls show exceedingly enjoyable. Aside from the band being nutty good, the audience seems to take it as an opportunity to put on the dog, get dressed up (and hey, here's a link to some o them!). Loved the Infinite Marionettes- a man on stilts behind a woman dressed as a marionette. He held wires on her arms, while she manipulated a marionette, which manipulated a smaller marionette, which manipulated a smaller marionette. Also, got a lollipop from a madeup young lady that I shoulda recognized but didn't see her SGDC post early enough, and was given a lyric-poem card by another couple of art-ushers:
Retinas are bleeding for the enterprise
surgically wired into paradise
yesterday I dropped in on a funeral
everyone was messaging like it was going out of style
I'd scan it, but uhh never have hooked my scanner up since I moved. It's in a box.
Drank after the show with drjmd. The bartender played The Band at the Backbar, prompting a discussion of much roots-rock between me and this guy Chet (discussed a lotta Stones... and he looked like Keith Richards). Funny, when I asked him his fave concert ever, he said Roxy Music, with Eddie Jobson on a plexiglass electric violin.
Party was great, again. I would say it was subdued, and shorter, but my pants did come off. We played strip blackjack (which I got through unchecked) and then strip Twister (which I sucked at; it's hard for an old drunk to keep his balance at 1 a.m., ya know). Before all that was Jenga, which thankfully Dierdre was sitting next to me for; it meant she toppled the stack before my go and I got to give her a few "loser's spanks." On the one hand, I admit to feeling peculiar spanking folks, since I'm shy, but on the other hand I spanked Dierdre which was stellar.
Also, hi to Ariel's friends, A**** and E***. See, I remembered! It just took a second time. I need to ask folks's names a second time more often. Also, Ariel, so great to see you again, and bredoteau, tigerwong.... and a first-time meeting of Morgan! Hooray- I finally got to hand her a pretty great Strongbadia tchotchke.
Got the Life Aquatic DVDs. Very enjoyable... the 10 Seu Jorge performances are 1) extremely well filmed, beautiful framing/camerawork, 2) different from the soundtrack; I can tell cuz after "Starman" on the CD he says "I need a more water" or something (I really can't tell what the hell he says), and he doesn't on this version), 3) he smokes way to much. He literally is smoking in every single one... and the movie... and the documentary footage. He sure smokes!
It was a beautiful weather weekend, and I've heard some great music, familiar (Dinosaur's You're Living All Over me, my mix CD from Mikael) and new to me (Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, EbtG's Tempermental.
ps - Hah, I finally looked at Fen's new (reject) pix!! (I always was at work last week when going by her Journal):
this pic goes really well with old punk-rock Soul Asylum (I had "Money Talks" on when opening the set)
