It's funny - I like some things that are very anti-reality, or imaginative, whatever you wanna call it... but at the same time, I feel like a lotta stuff involving 1) science-fiction/ spaceships, 2) superheroes/ folks with "magical" abilities", 3) Dungeons & Dragons-type stuff, 4) lots of computer special effects just leaves me totally, totally uninterested and bored.

I just wanted to throw that out there before anyone asks me if I saw Van Helsing.

No offense or anything... I mean, in fact, I have already seen and fairly enjoyed a sci-fi/ fantasy / hero/ special-effects movie with Hugh Jackman in it -- the first X-Men.
But I feel like one is enough. I saw an enjoyed the first Star Wars as a child. I saw the first... few... Star Trek shows and movies. I feel like it's time to move on. I have to quote John Carpenter again; they asked him why he didn't want to direct a Halloween sequel and he said, "Because it's the same movie... people go to a sequel to see the same movie again." That's as well as I can possibly put it.
I'm more interested in films involving real-ish conflicts and characters. Not necessarily reality, but at least human emotion and experience rather than superhuman feats.

"Good guys versus bad guys" bores me the most of all. I'm more interested in shades of gray. We are all partially good guys and bad guys... some of us have more good (like the people in my Friends list [shameless grandstanding smile ]) and some have more bad (such as child molesters, Dick fucking Cheney and Tom goddamned DeLay).

DEAN AND GENE! THE BROS WEEN! Eyes practically sewn shut by acres and acres of natural (and God-Only-Knows probably not-occurring-naturally-in-nature) drugs. I fucking love those guys.

Hear hear. Once again, you rant well, pal. A friend of mine is working on the HBO special for The Day After Tomorrow. I was watching them work and... you know... I look at the amount of money they put into these things and I wonder "why the BLOODY HELL can't you buy a good script, too?" Shades of gray? Not for us good Americans, thank you. You're "either with us or against us." If you aren't part of the "Axis of Evil" or one of the "coalition of the willing," then you might as well be French, and who wants to be that? I DO! I'M READY TO EXPATRIATE! Allons enfants de la etceeeeetera... Come next November.... but enough of that. I just heard a great review of Man On Fire that really rips on the simple black&white nature of most "Revenge" films. Makes me think of your rant.

On another note: I think I remember Douglas Adams talking about his love for the Macintosh in one or more of his novels.
