two films I saw...

In America-- I got a good vibe from the preview, so saw it plot-unknown... usually, this works out for me. It sure did today.
This is a lovely film about a young Irish family in New York. Despite the title, it's less about the immigrant experience than the story of these people and a neighbor, a very touching story of loss, faith, familial love, reaching out to others in pain, and through pain, that kind of thing wink how many times did I tear up in the eyes? Oh, about 9 or 10. One of the year's best.

The Station Agent-- Always afraid to be knee-jerk-PC, I held off from seeing this film just because the star is a little-person/ dwarf, but last night my friend Jimmy told me it was worth seeing, so I did.
It's very good... although, a rare complaint from me, it could've gone on more. At under 90 minutes, you feel like-- where's the last 15?
Well, resolution or not, the film follows Fin as he (you guessed it) puts up with nasty comments and stares from "normal" people as he settles into... well, a sorta undefined state of inheritance-fueled retirement, unwanted but relentless companionship from odd folks in his new town, and... you know, pursuing the question of where his life is going. A solid film that could easily use, also a very rare comment from me, a sequel. eeek

Pretty much everyone in the two movies is great. I suppose the most famous people in them are Samantha Morton in the first, and Michelle Williams in the second... but the daughters in In America, played by Emma and Sarah Bolger, and Peter Dinklage as Fin, are fantastic.... but like I said, everyone's great in both.

I'm looking forward to seeing "In America" too, because it seems like one of those rare movies that's emotionally open and warm without being manipulative. Too often, you can almost hear the director screaming at you "YOU WILL CRY NOW!"
