Below is a bit of a complainy blog, so I put treats at the bottom for people who slog through it or give advice.

So, I've asked a bunch of friends if they knew why my mix CDs sometimes don't work in my car stereo. They worked in my Walkman (when I plugged it into my old Honda cassette deck). They work on stereos. They work on my computer. But SOME don't work in my car.
wakeangel suggested I find CD-Rs manufactured in Japan... but I can't find any made there. It occurred to me after talkin to him that Japan is so small, and real estate at such a premium (ever see the hotels with shelf-rooms? or the tiered golfing ranges?) that they prob don't manufacture too much directly on the islands.
My friend Kyle also suggested downloading iTunes, but the free software doesn't let you burn CDs; it's only a player.
I thought the problem might be all the Office Depot CD-Rs I was using last year... but nope, some of my Memorexes fuck up too (although it seems maybe fewer do). I thought the problem might be when my PC had viruses... but nope, some are dated from before those troubles, and some I make now have problems. I thought the problem might be my newer version of Easy CD Creator... but nope, once again, I wrote the dates on many of my CD sheets.

I finally figured- HEY, stop asking your friends. Consult the manual! I did- it doesn't help.

So I finally called the dealership. Someone there MUST know what the prob is.

No, they don't.

I first talked to a woman who said I should "burn my CDs deeper." I told her I have no idea what she's talkin about. She said it might be from a setting on my software. So I've looked up "deeper" on my software, and guess what I found? Nothing.

I was put on the phone with a technician there. He said- he doesn't know the problem. He said he has the same problems. He said he has two computers at home, and his Dell has something called Sonic that burns CDs that work in his car, but the other software on the other doesn't work well. I said that's funny, because my PC was also originally a Dell, and it had Easy CD Creator 4 (now I have 5) installed.
(I always use the same settings when I burn: 4x speed, disc-at-once, finalize, write text. Every single time.)

What I'm thinking I need to do is- rip the useless fuckin CD player out, have a tape deck installed, and use my Walkman, and that way I can also still use tapes.

I have to say, I was afraid to replace my tape deck/ Walkman set-up with a CD player, and I'm "happy" to say that once again modern technology has proven as problematic as I figured it would be. Unfortunately the price for being correctly paranoid is I can't fuckin play my fuckin mix CDs.

Now- figuring out how and where to get a tape deck, if people still put them in, and how much will it cost.

I also think the maximum volume's a little low for my liking, but, y'know- one thing at a time.

Maybe I need to get a MP3 player, but you know, once again- modern technology that I don't trust. I've clearly already been burned once.

It's kinda funny. I think there is a tape revolution burbling under right now: I heard a guy who is a sound professional on tours and in the studio, and he mentioned something about it. robot
