What is absinthe like?
I had some painting to do tonight, so I decided to have a glass of absinthe. I like having something to drink when I paint, and since so many people ask what it's like, I thought this was a good time to describe it.
With this little caveat: when it comes to drinking, I am a total lightweight. Last night I had to go schmooze at a country club on a work-related matter, and I was out of my mind after two glasses of wine, so your mileage may vary, especially if you are better with alcohol than I am.
Anyway, on to the topic at hand: absinthe.
The taste is very much like black licorice. If you don't like black licorice, you will hate absinthe. Even with a fair amount of sugar, it still tastes like licorice.
The effect of is it like being drunk, except that you only get the physical effects of being drunk. Like right now, I'm having a really hard time typing, but mentally everything is very clear. Unusually clear. Maybe even more clear than normal.
The effects of absinthe seem to linger longer than other alcohol as well. For instance, I started this one glass of absinte about an hour and a half ago. I'm only 2/3 of the way finished with the glass, but I'm really still feeling the effects, and I have been this whole time.. And you don't drink absinthe straight - it's a mix of about 1/4 absinthe, 3/4 water. So it's some strong stuff, as far as I can tell.

BTW, I'm not a big fan of Licorice, but I might still like to try absinthe sometime.
