I live close to a number of council estates, populated by people who seem to be perfectly content with having either no job or a low paid dead end job, their satelite TV and their tabloid newspapers. They are very happy with their 6 or 7 children per household. They're positively blissful that they are going to lead a humdrum existence until the end of their days.

Sometimes I get insanely jealous of them, and also wonder how you can be happy with a meaningless existence.

Then, curiously enough, I find myself feeling happy that I'm not one of them.

Go figure

And by god yes you made me blush! - It can be very hard to present the english stiff upper lip when confronted with that!
