Blog Homework: Solidarity via Social Media

Social media is an easily accessible avenue for showcasing the worst parts of society at large.

Wanna tell that total stranger exactly where you see cellulite on their body? Go ahead and send them an anonymous direct message.

Need to make sure that classmate knows precisely how you disapprove of them not fitting the gender binary? Make a public status about it where all of your friends can publicly mock them.

Disapprove of someone’s background or cultural heritage? Be sure to let everyone know of your xenophobia with a meme shared on all of your social media platforms!!

But, luckily, positivity and good also manifests itself (sometimes). For me, social media has been a terrific source of solidarity, primarily in dialogues on sexuality and forging communities of inclusiveness.

——————————————————————————

The past year and a half of my life has been a period of tremendous growth in becoming my whole self and being that all of the time, not just when I know I’m in like-minded company.

It hasn’t just been about acknowledging something within that may or may not be true, but about my actions substantiating it. About me proving to my self (and subsequently others) that it’s more than a fleeting feeling.

Here’s an example. I’ve always been attracted to both men and women but only recently have been able to say (or type) out loud that I am bisexual. It was through following some amazing accounts on Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter that I gained comfortability in recognizing this as a fact, not something temporary, reactionary or shameful.

I was privy to these other individuals that I had never met because they were sharing their life experiences on a public platform that I could effortlessly view which subsequently lead to action.

———————————————————————————

SG is obviously a great example of social media fostering solidarity in (many) shared experiences. It’s a wonderfully diverse group that’ll make you feel like part of a community, no matter what your reality is like. Every day, I’m excited to interact with y’all.

I feel more like “me” right now than ever and that’s incredibly exciting.

Here’s to the future!!

@bigbear819 It can be scary at first, but it's totally worth it. I've really loved seeing who I'm still friends with after making some of these outward changes!!

There are def good and bad to social media. I can't help that but get angry when people use it in a negative way. Pisses me off. But I'm glad you're comfortable with who you are and aren't afraid to say it
