I hate that about iPod too.
I think you might be able to transfer songs if you use hard drive mode.
ephPod work pretty well to transfer files off as well as a ton of other little techy things. Not sure what else it does, but the iPod community seems to be massive. I'm sure there are some sweet tools out there to solve all my problems.
