The best was when they ran the Large Hadron Collider for the first time back in 2008 or so. Theoretically, a black hole can be created with it. I remember people literally freaking out over it because they thought the earth would get swallowed whole.

Ebola, the LAC, nuclear fusion. nobody bothers to actually learn even the fundamentals of how these things work, so as soon as someone says something scary they freak out and it becomes increasingly difficult to convince them otherwise
