Kirby Puckett

http://www.startribune.com/10017/story/287541.html

I remember watching the oscars last night, laughing my ass off at john stewart, making fun of the ridiculous comercials. Then, Channel 5 said in a news update that Kirby Puckett had suffered a stroke.

Of course my friends made light of the situation. for several reasons i had trouble with this.

Back in the days before i head the first shrill wail from Kurt Cobain's throat, my idol had been good old number 34. I had a massive collection of his baseball cards (in fact i'm pretty sure i had/have all of them). I can still remember walking into a baseball card expo at the state fair and borrowing $25 from my father to purchase Kirby's rookie card. I remember it as one of my most prized possessions in my pre teen years.

I remember Puckett flying against the plexi glass of the metrodome outfield wall, slaming up against it, and coming down with a ball in his glove, saving a world series game for the twins.

I remember the parades in downtown minnepolis, the confettie flying everywhere. I really haven't been much of a twins fan since he left.

I can remember bringing his autobiography to school and reading it a recess. It was the first "adult" book in finished in less than 3 days.

When charges were borught against him, i couldn't believe it. I know every newspaper in the country tomorrow will bring up his sexual assault charges in his obit, but i'd rather not dwell on that. the man was aquitted.

I'd rather remember the last time i had fun watching a baseball game, the excitment i had finding his rookie card, and being in the metrodome stands, watching kirby hit a homerun, what seemed like all of minneapolis on their feet.

RIP puckett
missmegs:
How sweet of you. And if you pack me and bring me to Sin City, I think I would be the one who owed you the first round of beers. And probably the second and third, too.
