I got a small scholarship this quarter and since our DVD player was having issues the wife and I picked up a bluray player/5.1 surround sound system from costco for $399. I really like it EXCEPT it doesn't have any HDMI inputs - so I can't hook the comcast DVR (or anything else) up to it and use the surround sound (even if it was only stereo), but it does have a digital audio input (I'll need to pick up a cable) that I could use. It is supposed to be able to player major computer formats (avi, mpeg, etc.) so that will be pretty sweet as I have a lot of TV series stored like that and it also has an iPod dock so the wife can hook up her iPod. Plus it works great playing BD and DVDs!
So in my UNIX programming class we got assigned our first programming assignment: write simple UNIX shell (called minishell or msh for short). The prof told us we would have at least 4, but probably around 7 programming assignments during the quarter and each would be an extension on the previous. We were given about 20 lines of existing code for the shell and we cannot change the existing code. The current assignment is to add command line argument/option parsing. I just started on it a little last night but I keep getting side tracked with other things (damn ADD!) I think this class is going to kick my ass, but the programming will be kind of cool.
I don't smoke pot, but I don't mind those that do - especially those that keep it to themselves and are mellow about it. However, about 2 months ago some new kids moved into the house next door and they smoke so much pot that it's all I can smell when we have any windows open or are outside. I don't know if they chain smoke it or what, but I'm tired of smelling nothing but pot. I'd like some fresh air once in a while... Also they have a party pretty much every other night and a band which practices a few times a week (I wouldn't mind the band if they could actually play something decent) - needless to say I'm tired of them. One of them came over a few days ago and asked my wife (she was the one that answered the door) if we were the ones that kept calling the cops for noise complaints.. we have never called the cops on a neighbor and I don't plan to, but the fact that he had the gal to come over and ask (btw that was the first time either of us have actually talked to them) kind of pissed me off. I _might_ consider calling the cops the next time they have a party and there is a lot of yelling just because of that, but I probably wont. I used to worry about my dog barking excessively when people walked by on the street or in the ally, but now I'm starting to not care so much because the neighbors FAR exceed any noise we (including my dog) make.
I have now been running Windows natively on the desktop and laptop for over a month now. I REALLY miss having Gentoo Linux on both machines! I can't switch back right now (too busy with school) so if I do decide to go back to Gentoo (or another Linux) it will have to wait until December when this quarter ends.
