Why are career choices so damn hard?
I started out as a history major at local university because it seemed like an interesting topic and had lesser requirements than most of the other majors. After about a year and a half I decided I didn't like history that much and tried to become a computer science major. Well after about a year I get to a math class (damn calculus!) that I haven't been able to pass (got a "D" 3 times in a row, which is a fail). If I ever attempt that class again I will be getting a tutor! Anyway, so my loving wife tells me to move on and suggests I go back to history - a good idea since I was already about 80% done with it.
A few quarters later I now only have 23 credits left (all upper division though...) to graduate with a B.A. in History. While I should be thrilled to be almost done I'm left with this gut-wrenching feeling that I'm not going to find many jobs that I: 1) am qualified for, 2) are interesting enough to do long-term, 3) 1 & 2 plus a history degree = what..?
My background is mostly in computers/technology with one major exception* and it has been what I've always gone back to when other things haven't work out in the past. That's not really going to happen with a degree in history... * [the exception being firearms which I am a long time sport shooter, life member of the NRA, and life member of the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation (GSSF)]
So after a lot of thinking, soul searching, writing ideas down on paper, ripping those ideas up, starting over, drinking copious amounts of mt. dew, pissing my wife off, not sleeping at night, drinking too much, drinking some more, etc. - I finally came up with one possible job/career that I _might_ be able to do (physical training is going to be the roadblock here): join the military as an officer. At least after 4+ years of service I might be able to get out and use the G.I. bill to do something else (like computer science.)
My other possible career interest would be law enforcement (police officer), but the pay for that doesn't look that hot and the requirements are just about as bad or worse (400 people applying for 2 opening.. wtf?!?) as joining the military.
If the military option doesn't pan out I'm out of ideas.. Oh, and apparently it is impossible to get financial aid to get a second bachelor's degree, so pursuing a computer science degree after finishing the history does not appear to be an option - even though I have never used financial aid!!!
Here's hoping something works out in the end...
