I finally got to do one of the things on my list, and was more than impressed!! It was a rough ride to Atlanta, but IanMichaelMiller and I made it in time for a leisurely 4th, and a spectacular 5th with Tom Waits!! I can't think of a better way to spend a 4th of July weekend. We got in late on the 4th and checked in to the Best Western. Usually a Best Western is nothing special, but the Best Western Granada is a whole different story.

It started out in the 20's as Italian villa style apartments, complete with marble stairs, intricate tiling, wrought iron balconies and a central fountain. It's so interesting seeing all the different architectural styles.
After doing some bar hopping, and watching a few fireworks, we went back to relax in our room.
On the 5th I woke up at the crack of dawn and spent all day waiting to see Tom Waits. I haven't felt that anxious and impatient since I was a kid going to Disney World. We spent most of the day walking around the city...probably a good thing after all the drinking and eating we'd be doing. Lol.
Finally, it was time for the show at the Fox Theatre. Photos don't do this place justice. Inside, it is gorgeous, decorated with beautiful patterns, and a sky that resembles the stars.

I can't even begin to describe how wonderful the show was. There were a few songs I thought he was a little off on, but for the most part, the music and performance blew me away; from his mirrored hat, to his superball-eyeball, and the gritty cloudy dust and the sparkling glitter. His commentary was also pretty funny, and his musicians impressive. There must have been at least 20 different instruments used in his set. The acoustics were perfect. With "Falling Down" played early in the night, Tom already had the audience hooked. "Chocolate Jesus" kept them hanging on and "Innocent When You Dream" was a sad and beautiful song, that he asked the audience to sing along. I am really hoping that Tom releases a DVD of that night. Funny fact; his youngest son was working the merchandise stand; nice guy and also part of Tom's band! (along with his older son, Casey)
Here's a set list from the night:
Lucinda / Take me down to the well (or was it Ain't Going Down to the Well?)
Down in the hole
Falling down
Chocolate Jesus
All the world is green
Cemetery Polka
Cause of it all / 'Til the money runs out
Such a scream
November
Hold on
Black market baby
9th and Hennepin
Lie to me
Lucky day
On the nickel
Lost in the harbour
Innocent when you dream
Hoist that rag
Make it rain
Dirt in the ground
Get behind the mule
Hang down your head
Jesus gonna be here
Singapore

Eyeball Kid
Anywhere I lay my head

So it's Savannah for me.
I'm off to explore!!! Hope the summer is bringing you all good things! kiss
