Lastnight I had a very busy and rough night at the animal clinic. As nasty as it was it was it would seem that it was just what I needed to break the fowl mood I was in (see the post before this one and you'll understand the bad mood). We were slammed and didn't have time to try calling in a second Vet.
Also, it wasn't just that we were busy, it was that the things coming in through the door were terrible.
One of the animals that transfered into us for overnight obsevation and possible care was a golden retriever that had been hit by a car earlier in the afternoon. There were black patches in his fur from the wheels of the car that hit him. The day vet hadn't done x-rays because his machine was down. We finnally got around to doing them at about 10:30 pm. In the radiographs (x-rays) this poor dog's spine looked like Harry Potter's scar! The spinal cord had beed jarred and seperated in two places and there was no hope of him surviving and having anything close to a functional life.
He was only a year and a half old too. It was tragic.
We had more cases along those lines with a couple of cats too.
The over all God vs. Emergency clinitions score was slightly in our favor though. I think it ended up being God-9/Emergency Clinitions-20 something. God and his chums made us bust ass for every point though.
Anyway, after a night like that I always feel like my job makes a difference to someone. around 30 people came in crying or worse and over half left with their little buddies wagging their little tails or at least a little new hope that tomarrow the sun may shine a little brighter on their families.
I don't feel so alone or lost anymore and I have a sence again, for a little while anyway, that I have a place here in the Valley of the sun that is worth having.
I'm feeling better - not perfect - but better.

Stuck here for seveal passing days, about to ship out at eight. Missed the southwest cheif. Back on along the trail.
