and now the counterpoint:
The last 72 hours have been a very bad time for wrestling and its fans. Normally at best the fans of wrestling get scoffed at if not to our faces behind out backs. We have a liking or a passion for something a large chunk of the world sees a fake or silly. Most do not understand anything about the business nor do they appcieate what goes in to becoming a big name in the wrestling world. Vince McMahon has come under fire as of late for his employees using steroids. Reguardless of the WWE's "Wellness Policy" I am sure he will suffer a lot of heat from everyone. The mainstream press is loving this story. The have something they can sensationalize and can make pro wrestling look bad in the same stroke.
I have seen opinions of fans go from "fuck Benoit" to the extreme opposite. I have seen the hatchet jobs by the press. I have seen McMahon back peddle on ECW. To be honest the WWE did the right thing on RAW. At that time no one knew what the detail were and second, it was a celebration of his career. It was not a celebration of the man his self. It was a celebration of Christ Benoit the wrestler not the man outside of the squared circle. In fact, as I recall many of the people reading this community were going to be very upset if RAW went on the air as planned. I for one was going to be very upset if they ran the RAW they had planned. Some including the WWE feel that show was a mistake seeing what happened. It was not.
I feel that even though Benoit's actions were the worst of human behavior. Even though he ruined his good name, and blackened the eye of the business he loved so much you cannot deny his ring talent. You cannot take away what he did for the business. Even as details started to come to light Monday night during RAW. I watched and I cried. I felt for our fallen hero. I will still claim that one of the best moments in wrestling was his win over Triple H and HBK at Wrestlmania XX. With Eddie in the ring to congratulate him, the moment made me cry at the time when happened. No one deserved a run more so than Chris Benoit at that time. When that match was replayed on RAW the ending of it brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't believe the two men in that ring are now dead. It is was a sad day for wrestling. It may not be remembered that way but it was.
I guess what I am trying to say is simply, yes he let ruined his good name, he hurt the business he loved so much badly. But in the end I can look past the faults of the man and look at his work for what it was, some of the best ever.
I mean what if we found out that one of the great artists of the like Picasso was a child murder would that make his art and less? No, Chris like many in wrestling had his demons, too bad they ended up getting the better of him. His art was what he did in that ring night after night for twenty years. And that my friends is what I choose to remember. That is what maybe we all need to remember.
