Explosions in the Sky saw a lot of play at the end of last year and still produces amazement in terms of their vision and expertise. Amusingly I was wearing a shirt before the band before I came to know their music. Lisa got me the shirt on the cheap from the Goodwill bins. The morning before I downloaded a bunch of their stuff I wore the shirt. I walked into Trabant on second and had to explain myself. I took it as a sign that I was ready.

So for the moment they are out of the running for great music because they've already made it.

Let's play a game.

Before I heard Bowie's - The Man that Sold the World. I heard Nirvana's version. It was an unquestionable cover in my mind perhaps because it came but also was fairly skillfully executed. However this version by Lulu is nearly terrible.

Give me an example of a cover song that you feel rivals the original and one that that is a terrible cover.

I have yet to meet anyone that heard the Bowie version first. Anyone my age at least. Was no one else raised on Bowie?!

Have you seen the movie Friday Night Lights? Explosions In The Sky did the score. One of my favorite posters I have on my wall at home is an Explosions In The Sky poster.

To answer your question... almost anyone who covers a Dylan song with the prime example being ""All Along The Watchtower" covered by Jimi Hendrix.

...also I love The White Stripes cover of Jolene by Dolly Parton.
