Some people were 'let go' today. It's similar to sacrificing people so that we still have meat to brave the winter or air to breathe in our sinking ship. Though, it's really not that grim.

Despite that I'm still positive and enjoying my work. I am still very much needed to make the company work and actually have a chance at making it. I see this is a positive statement of my personality and the work that I do.

INCLUDED 12/24/09:

There are often no contractual reasons for individuals to receive severances when leaving a company. Yet most companies that I have worked for in the last three years distribute a severance package to their employees of various measure based on time with the company, position, and other factors.

From the receiving end of a severance I have always been grateful, but I wonder:

1. Is this more common in my profession (software/technology) over other professions?
2. What is the incentive of the company to provide a severance package?
3. What is the harm in not providing a severance package?

While providing resources to outside information is definitely nice, I am also very interested in hearing our own person accounts.
