I give credit for this entry to 1KISS_OF_LIFEs most humbling moment. It reminded me of a similar event.

***
We wade out into the waves just as the last of the sunlight is settling in for the night. As we swim out, you understand why sailors refer to her as the inky depths because the water absorbs all color. You are surprised that it is not staining your skin.

The signal, and we drop below the surface. For a moment I can still see the lights of shore...and then I am lost in the depths of the universe. There is nothing above. No...I mean, NOTHING. And we descend into...nothing. The only way I know I am alive is I see my beam of light move as it scans desperately for some sign of the bottom.

I am not entirely sure which way is actually up. If the world suddenly decides to flip upside down, I would have no idea. What a great joke that would be. I wonder if I will emerge, feet first, in the sea of China.

And then we hit bottom. Time to explore. We see the world of the sea as it does not exist in the light. The reef blossoms with life that hides during the day. We make fast friends and faster enemies with a young octopus...who gives us his best reprimand inking and escapes unscathed from his benign captors.

And then we get the sign. The sign to willingly plunge back into the abyss. In sync, we kill our lights and, again, there is no world, no stars, no life. Only the comforting feel of he sand against our knees to tell us we have not become disembodied souls.

Just as you think the is no hope of light or life in the universe again, you see a spark in the distance. A SPARK in the middle of the ocean. You move your hand to respond, and green sparks fly from your fingertips. For a moment you think of how the creator must have felt when light first touched the deep. You and your fellow magicions fill the water with emerald, seemingly from will power alone.

And then, as quickly as it left, the reef returns in the brilliant blaze of a dive torch. It is time to return to the land, and air, and sun, and warmth. You say goodbye, and reenter the void. However, as you surface, the bright moon greets you like a candle left burning in the window. Just in case, it seems to say, Just in case somewhere between the depths and the air, you got lost in the nothingness from which we all came.

I had the overwhelming urge to end this with, Just like motel 6...he left the light on for us. But I figure if Im being all poetic and shit, might as well stick with the hoakyness.
magneticflux:
very good... cryptic and intimate... could do without the reference to the creator though biggrin
