another day

wake up at 7 AM
stumble into bathroom
look at myself in the mirror
and wonder where the hell
the days ran away to

brush teeth
gargle, rinse, repeat

now reach for the shaving cream
spread it over the surface
of 36 year old skin
and begin the methodical
actions once more
up and down
then
rinse razor under warm water
first one side
then the next

cup hands under running water
and then bring them up to my
waiting face to wash off
the extra cream
again

now look at my self in the mirror
again
and realize that I've cut myself
again
third time this week
today it's the underside of my chin
just slightly to the right of
yesterday's cut

shit,
looks like I'll be driving while
pressing a tissue to my face
again

move back into the bedroom
pick up the pants and shirt
from the floor and put them on
followed by the boots

then head toward the door
stopping momentarily to grab
wallet, keys, sunglasses, and cell phone

finally,
step out into the new day's sun
and wonder how many more days
they'll be
like this
