Ct Road Trip
Part 2
(see previous entry for part 1)

The opening band looked like they would be the worst thing on the bill when they took the stage. The guitarist, bass player and drummer were all metal guys, and the guitarist had one of those guitars that is like, two guitars, while the lead singer looked like Zazzoo from the Boston sketches on Saturday Night Live. Haha. Surprisingly they were kind of like a cross between sebadoh, greenday and Frente, with only one metal breakdown the entire time. I kind of liked them.
Up Next were Spitzz. Id been waiting a year to see them. Theyre the new project by Al Cloherty, Victoria, and until recently Chez Nips, formally of my favorite Boston Punk band, The Showcase Showdown. They put on a great set. Theyre more agro than they used to be, with growling vocals and occasional surf riffs. Victoria is as stunning as always, though Al now looks like a cross between Rivers Cuomo and Spencer Moody.
Following Spitzz were Under Investigation. Pretty standard, mediocre, Casualties-core. I had a mild panic attack in the middle of the set, as people started crowding me, and went outside to get some fresh air.
When the Distillers came on, I went back and sat on the side of the stage, next to the amps. As always, they put on an outstanding performance. Ryan is doing more vocals now, filling in where Casper would have sung before she flaked out, as well as on some new parts. The only new material since I last saw them in February, was a cover of an old Frank Black song, but they were more comfortable as a three piece band now, and they played a full set, with songs from both albums.
After the show, I hung out with Dot, Katie, Ryan and Fritch, for a while, then the girls and I went to a diner in the middle of nowhere for a 2am breakfast. Katie let me crash at her house, so I didnt have to sleep at a truck stop up the road, cradling my bat. I only managed about two hours of sleep. I could hear Katie talking in the other room all night. Dot told me she talked in her sleep all night.
I got back on the road at ten thirty, and drove back up I-95 without stopping until I reached Portland, keeping myself awake with a bottle of moxie and loud music. The drive was pretty easy. I just got in the middle lane and stayed there, doing seventy five to eighty mph the entire time. I stopped for lunch in Portland, and walked around for a while, then got back on I-95 until I reached Auburn. Right as I pulled into the driveway around three-thirty, the travel odometer clicked on its last mile, the six hundred and sixty-sixth of the trip. Kind of a cool little way to end my trip.
