I went to Denny's this morning for breakfast with my sister. It's the closest thing to a diner here in Lewiston/Auburn now that Gene's closed down, and the place was packed. Now, for clarity, when I say packed, what i really mean is full of rather grizzled people. There was a guy standing in line ahead of me dressed in (I shit you not) a union suit, thick suspenders, old blue jeans, shit kickers and an old, black knit cap, who had what looked like a scar from some horrible bear trap accident running down his face. The mechanics from the garage next door were lined up at the bar, chowing down in their greasey Dickies worksuits. In fact, I saw more suspenders, beer guts and trucker hats than a Murphy's Law / Jaw Breaker show.

After eating, Kate and I ran across the street to CVS. While looking for hair grease (not that i needed any, I have 2 unopened cans of Royal Crown sitting on my speakers), I realized that none of the CVS's or grocery stores in the area stock hair care products for African Americans. There are small, but sizeable populations of African Americans and Somali immigrants in the area, so I have to wonder where they get their stuff, in part because hair grease is most commonly used by African Americans, and it might mean i wont have to horde the stuff anymore.

I've been partial to the double pomade look for a long time. Once I get it combed how I want it, I take a decent sized amount of Royal Crown for hold. It's thicker and has not much shine so, once that's in, I go for a small amount of Murray's light for shine and a pleasing odor.

Until I can get the two kinds of black and white pomade in steady supply, I'll stick with it.

I'm one of like 100 greasers in Portland but, we do have tons and tons of Afro supply shops so, I'm never without. smile
