I dj-ed my first wedding last Saturday and it was a blast! I was kind of a last minute fill-in, but I didn't care! Moreover, the bride (an old, old friend of mine whom I've known since she got her license taken away for using a fake) is in this local band that's doin' pretty well for itself (they've made the cover of a number of local magazines and always do really well at the big showcases they play SXSW), so I didn't have to play no crap like "Holiday" by Madonna or nothin'! In fact, someone told me someone even said something like "You know, I think this is the first wedding I've ever been to where the music didn't completely suck." Now you have to understand, among the circles I run in, that's pretty high praise! The only real constraint I had was that I obviously had to play stuff that was parent, grandparent, and aunt and uncle friendly, but I thought I did pretty well.

My playlist included the following:

Heart Of Glass by Blondie

Let's Go Crazy by Prince

Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order

99 Red Balloons by Nena (this actually played as the bride and groom were tossing out the bouquet and garter, which I thought fit pretty well)

Night Time Is The Right Time by Aretha Franklin (it was actually really, really sweet to see the bride and groom dancing to this. In fact, the groom thanked me for playing such a good song)

Satisfaction by Otis Redding (a cover of the Rolling Stones tune)

Don't Stop Till You Get Enough by Michael Jackson

Son Of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield

Love Is The Drug by Roxy Music

The end of the evening was kind of weird though. It was kind of like the beginning of Noah Baumbach's Kicking & Screaming in that a bunch of kids wearing fancy pants suits and dresses who usually never wear fancy pants suits and dresses were sitting around a couple tables on a fancy pants balcony wondering what the fuck we were going to do with the rest of our lives now that a threshhold's been crossed...

That moment didn't last long, though, because when someone had the Parker Posey moment of getting up and declaring "I'm gonna find some pot," she brought back a tray of "special" brownies.

Man, sometimes, I just really, really love my friends...
